Behind The Music
Arrowe Sound Hospital Radio is no newcomer to broadcasting, in fact we have been providing entertainment and aiding patient recovery since 1973. Under our original name of Radio Catherine from our studios at the old St. Catherine’s Hospital on Church Road in Birkenhead we provided a then, restricted service to patients and staff across the site and also to The Birkenhead General Hospital on Park Road North. When Arrowe Park was opened in 1982, Radio Catherine began broadcasting via landline to the new site whilst studio space was sourced prior to relocation, before being relaunched as Arrowe Sound Hospital Radio to reflect our new surroundings and audience base.
2021 Was a big year for us, we moved to our new home in the Clatterbridge Health Park with our Sister Station “Radio Clatterbridge”
Initially broadcasting from our purpose built 3rd floor studios into the day rooms and on the patient power bedside service, the station was again relocated in 2004 to our new home on the 2nd floor. Moving Forward Embracing advances in technology the station went digital in 2005 introducing our new 24/7 broadcasting service providing patients and staff with automated non stop output during twilight hours. Moving forward, In 2014 the station was re-branded ‘Arrowe Sound’ with our new strapline ‘Your Choice First’ and in response to patient demand installed our own internet service enabling us to extended our broadcasting platforms.
In 2015 we introduced our new imaging and jingles packages and our second floor studios underwent a complete refit at a cost of more than £4000 thanks to our continued fundraising efforts and generous donations. Our Website was also restructured and we extended our accessibility to patients, staff and their families to include email services, a website request platform and a direct dial telephone line into our ‘on air’ studio.
The Future’s Bright today, we broadcast 24/7 to the patients and staff across the health park, on your Mobile via the TuneIn Radio App and Online worldwide via our Website. With an eclectic mix of versatile presenters, our music genres makes Arrowe Sound appeal to every generation. Our specialist music programmes include Country and Jazz.
With the appointment of a new fundraising manager shortly, we look to expand awareness in the community bringing more than just music to the patients and staff of Wirral University Teaching Hospital. With our dedicated team of volunteers who willingly give their free time both on air and in the community, the future is bright, the future is Arrowe Sound.
